6. There were some causes to why the United States and the Soviet Union ended up becoming rivals, instead of allies. First off, the United States had some negative feelings towards Joseph Stalin's decisions, he had the role of the dictator in Russia. The Americans had these feelings because he had made the decision to sign a pact with Germany in the year 1939. It was a nonaggression pact. What this means is that Russia and Germany had decided not to fight with each other. Not only did the United States frown upon this act, but also that Stalin chose to put the blame on the fact that the Allies didn't invade a part of Europe "soon enough." (Before 1944). However, the two nations had a completely different outcome when it came to the war, and so therefore they both had different goals they wanted to strive for after the war. For example, the United States lost about 400,000 people due to the war. Although this was all that we lost, are cities etc., stayed in tact. The Russians, however had it much worse, they lost many more lives, and along with this increase, they also lost their cities due to the war. These dramatically different outcomes made the now future goals very different for both nations. Another one of the factors that helps to explain the relationship between Russia and the United States is "The Berlin Airlift." The United States, along with its own allies, fought over Germany with Russia as well. Although Russia wanted the United States to suffer, later on, the United States decided to hold back their forces from Germany. Russia then reacted to this choice by doing nothing other than holding part of Berlin
