On the first of November 1955, after an alleged unprovoked attack from Vietnamese submarines, government officials were dead set on going to war. This ignited a rivalry between Vietnam and America. Officially declared armistice on April 30th, 1975, a war that lasted almost two decades, sparked a major distrust between Americans and foreigners. It caused many political views of the public and officials to shift towards a more exclusive government and many Americans turned on each other, raising questions about the functionality of American society.
The Vietnam War was one of the longest lasting conflicts in American history starting on November 1st, 1955. Dwight Eisenhower began the United States' involvement with the Vietnam War by creating the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization to help squelch communist uprisings in the area. With conflicts growing between the Communist North Vietnamese and the anti- Communist South Vietnamese the U.S sent the first troops in 1965 to aid in stopping the spread of Communism. Even after 41 years of the war being over people still debate the legality of the vietnam war. Some say under the international laws of war it was legal and just for America to intervene with the conflict.

The Viet Minh was the communist group who wanted to declare independence from France. The U.S did not want communism to be spread and that was the reason why they joined the war and supported the South. For the United States, a communist Vietnam meant the spread of the Soviet Union influence abroad the Asia’s territory (domino theory).
On March 8th, 1965 the United States officially entered the Vietnam War. A war that was supposed to be fought between the North and South side of Vietnam. The war lasted between 1955 to 1975, with over 58 thousand US soldiers being killed, 2 Million Vietnam civilians being murdered and over a million Vietnamese and Vietcong soldiers also dying. The Marines dove for cover in trenches and bunkers while a mess hall was flattened, the regimental commander’s quarters was hit, fuel storage areas were set ablaze, and several helicopters and trucks were destroyed” (Burke, 2014). While defending an offensive from the North Vietnamese for 77 days, the Soldiers of the Marines and South Vietnam, had to watch the NVA begin digging trenches and tunnels around and towards the base at Khe Sanh.
