President Richard Nixon stated, “When the President does it, that means that it's not illegal”. Richard Nixon was our 37th President, he served the United States from 1969 to 1974. He was the only President in U.S history to resign while in term. His resignation was due to what we call “The Watergate Scandal”. The day before he resigned in 1974, he went on national television to state that he can no longer serve his duty as a President and as Congress for the United States. This left many to wonder if he was in fact guilty of conspiracy in the Watergate scandal. The Watergate scandal occurred the night of June 17,1972. One of the convicted burglars, James McCord decided to finally speak. He stated that he was peer pressured in keeping hush about the situation. This was the key element into letting us know that Nixon did in fact have everything to do with this. After many investigations, Nixon had a subpoena to give up audio tapes. He did not want to cooperate, but after many attempts he decided to give up edited versions. “The battle over the release of the tapes continued as the special prosecutor, Cox, refused to drop the subpoena. When the Attorney General Elliot Richardson and his deputy William Ruckelshaus refused to fire Cox, Nixon called for their resignations. He was able to fire Cox anyway and both the AG and deputy AG resigned in protest” (Thejournal.ie). Nixon had no choice to speak live shortly after and tell his people that he was “no crook”. He was never convicted but others involved were.
