The Watergate scandal was a political scandal that dealt with the White House and the president at the time, Richard M. Nixon. Nixon had served as vice president but later decided to run for president, and did not win. When he tried again he was successful, but this made him troublesome, according to an article, “scarred by his experience in the 1960 campaign, Nixon was extremely distrustful of the media and people he considered his political enemies”( Gale 1 ). Nixon felt this because he knew when he lost the first time it was the media against him. He wanted to continue being successful in staying president and beating his other opponents. This connected to Nixon, according to the article “when police found a White House phone number to the president’s re-election committee on one of the burglars” (Gale 2). When this connection was made public “Nixon denied any involvement by members of the White House staff, calling the break-in a “bizarre incident” (Gale 2). Apparently, he never ordered the break-in or knew anything about it, but additionally the article states that, “he did arrange for the burglars to be paid “hush money” and told his aides to make sure the CIA obstructed the FBI’s investigation” (Gale 2). Nixon wanted this to be like it never happened and that he had no part in this so he could be re-elected and easily win. Nixon was the first president to resign. Moreover, the Watergate scandal shows the government’s corruption in politics. It caused the government to protect privacy laws and have greater political transparency. According to a recent article, “Whether a healthy concern for public ethics had become an obsession, Watergate irrevocably changed political mores in the United States”(Sons 1). The change in the political mores has changed the way the government communicates with citizens. The government has passed new codes of conduct and legal ethics for public officials. These laws that were passed have changed the way the government works. There was a lack of leadership and abuse of power in the government.
