Nixon’s Watergate Scandal Do you think President Trump will be the first sitting president to face impeachment? Unfortunately for us the answer is no, he won’t be first but hopefully he’s next. Our 37th President, Richard Nixon, was almost impeached for the events that took place on June 17, 1972, the night of the Watergate break in, which would come to be known as the Watergate Scandal. The Watergate Scandal involved robbery, presidential corruption, verbal harassment as-well as assaults on a senator’s wife, and a long list of other unlawful acts. Nixon didn’t order the break in directly but when he found out about it he acted fast in covering it up, suggesting to Colson that they pay off the burglars so they can keep quiet. In the end, it was discovered that Colson was the one who ordered the plumbers to break into Watergate. Because the break in still involved Nixon, the senate committee, also known as the Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities was created in 1973, to investigate Nixon’s involvement in the entire scandal. Nixon almost got away clean until Butterfield, one of his deputy assistants leaked how paranoid Nixon was. Nixon did good things for the American people and was loved by most. When the public found out about the Watergate break ind, they didn’t call for his resignation or impeachment. As a matter of fact, he won his re-election by a landslide. Although, he won he was still under scrutiny but the FBI and because of this it was discovered that he secretly taped the majority of all conversations in the Whitehouse.
