What have cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, and firearms done for us in the past? Kill our loved ones? Given us disease? Yes, they have. Irving Coffman states that cigarette companies are paying financial settlements for health problems caused by tobacco addiction. If cigarette companies are doing this, why shouldn’t firearm and alcoholic beverage companies (which are just as lethal as cigarettes) be doing this as well? I agree that both alcoholic beverage and firearms companies must pay for the problems they cause. Alcohol has been around for a very long time now, and ever since the 1900s has been a conflict for many people and families. My grandmother, Gale Arellano (who I never met), died at the age of 50 due to liver and heart problems, she was an alcoholic. Many other families are impacted by this as well, as around ⅓ of suicides are due to alcohol abuse. Not only does alcohol abuse lead to death of loved ones, but also has been the cause of many date rape incidents. Gun control is a big issue being discussed in America. Many events in the past 5 years give us reason to discuss the issue of guns. Some examples being the Sandy Hook school shooting around 4 years ago. A mentally unstable man had access to a gun, went to school where his mother was teaching, and killed many children, teachers, and other staff members. Why should others be harmed when they did nothing at all? The UK banned guns in household and as a result only say 35 deaths a year that were due to guns. Now in comparison to the USA’s 30,000 deaths a year that were due to guns, we can see the significant harm done.
