PBS’s, Nova What Are Dreams, is a forty-five-minute documentary about how different stages of sleep effect our dreams. Throughout the documentary, we also witness how dreaming is essential for making sense of the world around us. For nearly a century, many thought when one is asleep the brain is asleep as well. Yet not until technology advanced, did scientists begin examining sleeping patients to notice every ninety minutes their patients brain showed activity as if they were awake but were still unconscious.
“The Open Boat” is a story of four men who are abandoned on a small boat in the middle of the ocean. Throughout the story it shows their struggle to come to terms with their situation; and not only does it show their physical strifes, but it also shows their mental battles to help them survive. The men eventually lose hope of being rescued. However, in the end, the men are eventually met by people carrying rescue gear on the shore. Most of the men survived; the boiler, however, wasn’t so lucky.
Of Mice and Men Dreams help motivate people to keep moving forward with a goal in their life. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie travel together as migrant workers through California looking for a job. Their dream is to own their own ranch after finding a job that pays well. But impossible from the challenges that they gain along the way. The dreams in the novel affects the characters lives on how they feel towards one another, and themselves.
To dream is to desire an achievement which seems unobtainable. Most everyone has trouble convincing themselves that their dreams are within reach. Jim Carrey once said, “So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality.” This is a result of allowing dreams to remain dreams and, instead, opting to take a more reliable path. In doing so, a sense of emptiness that never completely dies out is often developed.
For example, if someone had the desire to write a book, they would write copious amounts of drafts and edit all their work. Also, it might take several times to figure out everything. Dreams are not a one-step process. They take time, but there will be time. In a minute there is time for a hundred visions and revisions.
A lucid dream is one in which you're aware of the dreams. Being self-aware in this state is quite the experience and it's something we constantly try to replicate. Nearly 20% of the population has these dreams every month but most of them happen accidently. There are certain strategies once can undertake to practice this form of dreaming however with the help of this technology, one can get in the state much faster. THE SCIENCE BEHIND A LUCID DREAM
fter watching the movie “I’ll See You in My Dreams, although quite humorous and enjoyable, I found the issues of ageism and sexism displayed in this movie. Also there were some signs of prejudice that held an inaccurate attitude about a category of people. In this case, it was an inaccurate attitude about older women. I never really have tried to observe issues in a movie before so it was interesting to catch certain displays. There were many strong portrayals and opportunities to observe the main character, Carol Petersen.
One of the most common brain activities during sleep is dreaming. Scientist still to this day do not fully understand why we dream or what dreams are exactly. “Some experts suggest that dreams represent the replay of the day’s events as a critical mechanism in the formation of memories, while others claim that the content in dreams is simply the result of random activity in the brain.” It is known that visually intense dreaming occurs most commonly in the REM sleep stage. Dreaming causes the brain to become very active, and not only at displaying the images we see during our dreams.
What does it mean to dream? Well, I believe dreams will always remain a mystery of phenomenons that science will never be able to explain. However, we can interpret our dreams in many different aspects. Philosophers, such as Alan Watts, interpret dreams in an interesting way, such as it being an adventure (The Dream of Life). From this, I’d like to think of dreams as adventures for our minds; we’re subconsciously wandering to a new adventure every time we decide to rest our eyes.
Dreaming is a huge part of people’s lives. Dreams happen to everybody and are different to everybody. They tell a lot about a person’s life. Dreams are viewed differently by so many people. People have opinions on what makes dreams happen, what dreams are, and what they mean.
1. Introduction Starting from the ancient times humans has always been interested in strange phenomena of sleeping and dreams. Dreams can be explained psychologically as images of subconsciousness and feedback of neural processes in human's brain. For most of us, dreaming is something quite separate from normal life. When we wake up from being chased by a monster, or being on a date with a movie star, we realize with relief or disappointment that "it was just a dream."
(Sometimes I had more than one dream in one night.) I will first say that my sleeping patterns are not at all constant. In fact, they seemed to bounce all over the place. I can confirm that everything that I dreamt about correlated with my thoughts during the day. So, to me, it seems obvious that my dreams are being based off of the cognitive approach to dreaming.

There have been many times in my life where I have either woken up in the middle of the night from a horrible nightmare or woke up in the morning trying to recall my dreams. I have spent a lot of time researching what my dreams mean. Although we have experienced countless dreams in our lifetime, do we ever stop to think: how dreams occur? How dreams affect our lives? Do dreams even mean anything?
Today I first discussed when dream occurs. Second, I discussed theories of dream. Finally, I discussed the dream interpreter. Understanding when dream occurs, theories of dream and what they mean help us grasp what dreams actually
