In the novel speak, Melinda loses her best friend Rachel because of doing the right thing at a party. This causes Melinda to become very Isolated and makes her feel like there is no hope for her left. There’s nobody else she can open herself up to. Now what if your ex best friend starts dating somebody that you are completely against? You would want to make sure that your ex best friend is going to be treated right and not going to be hurt in any way. When Rachel tells Melinda that she thinks she’s just jealous that she’s dating Andy, a spark in Melinda is lit and Melinda does whatever she can to stop them from dating each other so she can guarantee Rachel’s safety. Losing them over something you did at a party or anything else that might make people angry but knowing that you did the right thing is the worst way to lose a best friend and would make you start to feel like you have no hope in your friendship left. When losing someone that you could tell everything about and feel comfortable talking about or someone that you can rant on and on about all of your problems makes you feel like you have nobody else to open up to mostly because you don’t. But having nobody to be able to open up to encourages you to want to go out there and look for someone that you would be comfortable with opening up to. For example Melinda loses her best friend Rachel after calling the cops at a party because something terrible happened to her. After Melinda lost Rachel, she felt very isolated and wasn’t comfortable around other groups of people and she felt like there was nobody left to help her with her problems. Throughout the novel Melinda slowly opens up to people again after realizing that her ex best friend is dating the person that she had been raped by. This forces Melinda to think that she has to go out there and open up to people so she can save Rachel from the same thing that happened to her. In this case Melinda had to open up to people and to make people believe that Andy Evans is a terrible person but she refuses to let out what happened to her in the past because she’s afraid everyone won’t believe her and will eventually turn against her. Taking risks is a big part in making your confidence better and is a big part in becoming closer to newer people. If you ever want to get your best friend back from something like this you are going to have to be taking big risk like how Melinda did. Melinda took this risk because she believed that doing the good will make the good happen back to her. In return of doing this, the conflict between Melinda and Rachel started to disappear and things between the two began to become better. By Melinda opening up to people around her school and convincing them to believe that Andy Evans is actually a bad person, she was then provided with assistance from people, more people started to spread around that Andy Evans is actually a terrible person and to stay away from him. This eventually gets to Rachel and she finally believes Melinda. Always take risks if it’s the last thing you can do to make things
