The Melting Arctic Could Start A Cold War

The Arctic circle is potentially rich in its undiscovered resources. These resources include, for example, untapped oil and gas. The melting ice caps -as a result of climate change- are opening new waterways and trade routes. (Kroeger: “EU warns of climate change threat” BBC NEWS. 2008.) These new trade routes are valuable in saving time with transports between The Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

A cold war is a ‘passive’ war. Instead of active gunfight; arms race, heightened tension between the blocs, propaganda, and threats are what characterizes a cold war. Single battles may occur, but their scale is significantly smaller compared to an ‘active’ war. There has been dispute over if a modern cold war is already …show more content…

To foresee the possible Cold War II, factors like economic situations of the countries involved need to be taken into account. Regarding the view that there already is a cold war in the Arctic, the argued ‘arms race’ has not been frequent enough to call it a full-blown arms build up. Additionally, the political aspect of a cold war has not been fully exploited.
