This poem is about a young man that is in the midst of battle, trying to cross an open space of land to kill the enemy that is hiding in the “green hedge” in the distance, and all the while confused about what he is doing. He knows physically that he is charging at the enemy, but when he thinks about his reason for doing it, he has no answer for himself. He is ashamed of the “human dignity” that is “Dropped like luxuries” in the “cold clockwork” that he is participating. I felt a connection with this poem mostly in the line of “Listening between his footfalls for the reason of his still running” as I often find myself in the same situation as this man. During the school seasons in particular, I wonder sometimes why I do what teachers tells
Another portion of the text that is worth analyzing is whether or not the poet is a real person or a generalization about all or most poets. All of the lines in the poem use general text and never label a specific person. What’s interesting about the text is that without the title it would be nearly impossible to distinguish whether or not the person the poem is about is a poet or not. The way the text allows the reader to find a figurative meaning to the poem is by being vague enough and
This is an important role of poetry because everyone loses something precious to them at some point in their life. Her next example talks of a person who can receive
In this poem he wanted us to know not to give up on your dream because if you do you will not succeed in your dream. Some of the feelings in this poem bring sadness and pain
The first view this song supports is that you are in charge of your own life and destiny; the lines "No one else, no one else can speak the words on your lips. Drench yourself in words unspoken live your life with arms wide open. Today is where your book begins, the rest is still unwritten," represent that perfectly. Another view this song embraces is one of non-comformity and being willing to do what others may not in the lines of "I break tradition, sometimes my tries are outside the lines. We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way".
The last words of the poem are often the most important. “determined/ to do the only thing you could do, / determined to save the only life you could save.” The person was very persistent but in the end, it pays off. The person decided to make his or own destiny. He or she was able to realize that this decision isn’t anybody else’s choice to make.
It may be because of how random it is, or perhaps it is the way it is for a completely different reason. Whatever it is, I don’t think I’ll ever know or understand just by thinking about it. The truth of the matter is that I didn’t and couldn’t understand what this part of the poem and the rest of it mean, let alone be able to explain it in simple statements and words. I’ve written it over and over again, and I’ve listened to myself say it again and again but nothing came of it when I forcibly looked for answers.
To start, the poem does not seem like the typical poem about love. It begins with all of the elements that love cannot deliver. For example, when she states “Love is not all” (line 1). This creates a tone of where the poet does not trust or believe in the power of love. Then, it goes into saying how people are killing themselves because they do not have the feeling of being loved in their life.
Living simply always allows you to live life in a way that is being controlled by your fate. This poem uses simile to help illustrate the transcendentalist tenet of dismissed tradition and social convention to live simply. In the poem it states, “And our hearts, though stout and brave, / Still, like muffled drums, are beating” (14-15). This example of simile shows that even though life comes to an end we should still pursue our goals. It connects to living simply because by focusing on your goals you are doing exactly that.
The next few stanzas imply that no matter how far one has fallen from God, no matter what one has done, God still loves them. Even when one is going through a terrible time, and they feel as if they have been abandoned, God is with them. The poem then moves into discussing how a God-led life is fruitful. Living one’s life to carry out the will of the Lord yields one true joy, something that the things of this world are incapable of doing. Placing one’s trust in Jesus will bring them a robust sense of hope, and it will help give one strength to carry on through tough times.
Through the poem’s tone, metaphors used, and symbols expressed the poem portrays that fear can make life seem charred or obsolete, but in reality life propels through all seasons and obstacles it faces. The poem begins with a tone of conversation, but as it progresses the tone changes to a form of fear and secretiveness. The beginning and ending line “we tell
There is such a bigger meaning to these poems on overcoming hardships in life that everyone has to go through. To not give up and to fight for what is
It talks about how when people do the wrong things that they should be punished for it as well as the followers the wrongdoer has and eventually they will be punished. I liked this poem because it represents so many things in today’s society. Many people do the wrong things but think nothing of it at the time. They never take into account that at their last day of judgment, every wrongdoing will be counted for and they will be punished for it
The poem is based on a white, wealthy, bald, and insecure middle-aged man. His life is uneventful, dull, and unexcitable and lives a depressing life. He has become frustrated because he can’t make decisions because of the fear he has of becoming a failure. He has let his own opportunities get in his own way and he is scared to take risk in his life, he is afraid to talk to women and this has caused him to be lonely. He does the same routine day after day because of the insecurities that he has.
The literary elements in this poem add to the effect the poem has on the reader, which can be different for everyone, but it makes the reader reflect on their own life and how kindness has changed
