In the poem Rain, Billy Collins’ establishes censorship relating to surveillance, creating societal issues, such as the deprivation of humanity extending to the destruction of the mind. The poet continues to construct negative connotations to the title, Rain, indicating the controlling metaphor as censorship’s effect spiraling into the negative impacts the populace faces discussed throughout the poem. Personification intends to reach the boundaries of nonliving objects into humanistic actions, for instance, “these birds have done nothing, a few protested. That is precisely the problem. The loudspeakers answered” (7-8).
This metaphor displays his uncertainty as per his crucial part in that moment in time. The soldier pictures himself as the hand on a clock, subject to the inevitable force of a clockwork motor that cannot be slowed or quickend. He realises that he does not really know why he is running and feels “statuary in mid-stride”. However, towards the end of the poem, all moral justifications for the existence of war have become meaningless- “King, honour, human dignity, etcetera Dropped like luxuries in a yelling alarm”, which is extremely dismissive of all the motives people provide for joining the army, explicitly stating that those motives do not justify and do not withstand the war. Disorientation is also highlighted in the line “Stumbling across a field of clods towards a green hedge That dazzled with rifle fire” where the confusion between the natural world and man-made world is expressed.
The majority of adults today remember exactly where they were and what they were doing on September 11th, 2001. Billy Collins is a contemporary, American poet who was asked to write an occasional poem for the first anniversary of 9/11, by congress. Afraid that declining this invitation would damage his career, he accepted this great honor, in order to pay tribute to the victims from the fall of the Twin Towers. Collins awake early on morning and started to write the poem. He titled the elegy, “The Names,” which voices the honest truth for the victims of the attacks on World Trade Center in New York on September 11th, 2001.
This particular poem is about parents that have no idea what's going on in their kid's daily life and what they go through. With this type of action, the parents act as if all is good and make little to no effort to get involved in their day to day activities. This shows the kid that the parent does not care or seems like it. The kid will be influenced to do things they normally wouldn't do. If the parent would at least make an attempt to get involved, it may influence them for the better but until then it will not happen.
Question: In the moments when Dawée rejects her life in the East is she longing to return to her original lifestyle, or is she longing for something separate from the two societies she has experienced? In other words, where does she feel she belongs? In the beginning of the story, we see Dawée longing to travel to the East, be it out of envy for her brother who had already spent three years there, or out of a desire to explore the unknown.
The poem begins with the narrator describing being alone in the woods. She is being dragged through the water, by a mysterious man which develops the sense of imprisonment. She describes the man’s language as not human and she turned to prayer to find strength.
In this poem, one can see the different meanings that are shown throughout the whole poem. The reason on why I chose this specific poem is simply because it shows how one will or can end up in their late future of living. Another reason in which I like it is because it connects with the temptation that one has when they are missing something which can be shown in this poem. The reason why I like this poem is because it has multiple images that one can imagine from reading the text. It is a really interesting piece of a writing.

As the poem continues, he explains how he does not care for the problems around the world and justifies that the war victims would not understand what he was going through as “You haven’t had enough to know what it’s like.” This line shows how the speaker does not care for the suffering of war victims. He know the war victims are underprivileged as they “haven’t had enough” but doesn’t care if they are killed so that he can keep his privileged life say. The speaker opens in first person, we can see through the eyes of a soldier as they are going through active combat. Lots of imagery presents itself in these first three stanzas but once we get to the fourth and final stanza we have a shift in perspective and we as readers are now being addressed and essentially warned about the horrors of war.
