Why I Want To Do Coastal Cleanup Day

Right now, there is a garbage patch in the middle of the Pacific Ocean containing over seven million tons of weight, all being garbage that humans have produced. Due to this startling fact that is present in our lives, I decided to do a beach cleanup on Coastal Cleanup Day. Along the California Coast, trash is littered everywhere, even some right in our own backyards which is why it is important to make sure we keep our coasts and oceans clean and beautiful. Keeping our ecosystems and local communities trash-free is a necessity in today’s world because of the careless use of mother nature that has been destroying much of our environment. I never really understood how big Coastal Cleanup Day was until I actually took part in the event. All across California, people line up across our beaches with gloves on their hands and buckets by their sides ready to pick up trash. Every piece of trash I picked up, I knew I was making a difference. I knew that I was making our beaches and oceans a better, cleaner, healthier place for all. Of course I also knew that the impact I was making was small, I still nonetheless felt that it was important for me to be doing the work that I was doing. Furthermore, these two hours of community service that I did inspired me to research more on this topic, and I would also like to do more beach cleanups in the future as well. Not only did I feel that I was making a difference but I could see it too. When I took that first step onto the beach, I could already spot out trash, but when I was done (along with the hundreds of other people picking up trash) I could barely see any at all. Simply just cleaning up a beach taught me so much and affected me where I am more conscious of these looming issues we all face
