Being raised in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles with constant gang violence, the majority committed by youth, worries me. I wonder how so many young men and women can tarnish their futures and become involved in such awful activities. Constant crime, and death is what I have grown up in, and I want to change that. I want to help improve my community by learning how to help youth from becoming involved with the wrong crowd and encouraging them to learn how to express themselves in a healthier manner. The mind of a teenager is very vulnerable to the influences from their surroundings, and I want to learn how to prevent them from falling into the cycle of crime.
I will be attending the University of California, Davis, and I have decided to major in Sociology with an emphasis in law and society.Questions such as,“Who creates the social status? Why do people commit the actions they do?” are what I want to study. In other words, how legal and criminal systems operate and theories of legal/criminal behavior. I found Freud's theory of the ‘ Id, Ego, and Superego,’ rather interesting, as it speculates a human’s personality and behavior.The ‘Id’ represents a person’s animal urges which they are born with.The ‘Superego’ represents the rules and moralities that the person assembles as they grow up.
