In 1776, one of the most popular and well known founding fathers led the fight for independence in the royal colonies. In David Hackett Fischer’s book, “Washington’s Crossing”, he describes the troubles and even the unknowns of Washington’s experiences during the Revolutionary War. Fischer goes into detail about the first approach of the British as their massive naval fleet surrounds the state of New York all the way up to the point when the British became the defensive force rather than the offensive. “Washington’s Crossing” illustrates how the American Revolution wasn’t just pure success as at the beginning of the war, the Americans took many losses that almost completely crushed the revolution entirely. Perhaps the most famous line from the Declaration of Independence, written on July 4, 1776. 1776 by David McCullough is about just that: the year 1776, though it does mention events in previous and following years, in American history. McCullough’s purpose for writing the book is very clear: to educate readers about the details of the American Revolutionary War from the view of both sides in and around 1776. McCullough achieves this through mostly logos, but uses ethos and pathos just as well.
In the book The Birth of the Republic, 1763-89, Edmund S. Morgan uses narrative analysis to describe an account of the beginnings of the American government. He explains in depth how the problems of British taxation made the Americans want to search for alternative, established standards to secure their own freedom, and how it led to Revolution. It is obvious, as it is shown in the bibliography, that Morgan used much research to secure his claims. He enjoys saying, “When you construct a building, you put up scaffolding. But when the building is finished, you take the scaffolding down.”

The road to the American Revolution consisted of several events, which escalated to the war that began April 19, 1775, as the tensions between the American colonies and the British Government advanced towards breaking point.

Each believed in the fundamental right to be free from rule. Patrick Henry appealed to the people’s fear of war. Thomas Jefferson was able to convince people that together, they could form a new nation. The writings of each man reveals a very chaotic time in America’s history and the leadership, determination, and boldness of Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson ensured that when change came, the people were ready for it.
Soon after the Seven Years’ War, the British and the colonists learned that victory came with a rather expensive price (Kennedy, Cohen, & Bailey, 2010). Great Britain tightened its grip on the colonies in North America, expecting colonists to pay for their financial struggles. In order to make colonists pay for the war, Great Britain reminded the North American colonies who had authority by controlling the colonists to submit to various ordinances ratified by British Parliament. This action only showed that arrogance leads to rebellion socially, economically, and politically. Socially, a lack of communication between Great Britain and the North American colonies was to blame for the Revolutionary War.
1. • Were the Colonists fighting for: It is important to establish that the colonists were a constituency of varied parties maintaining different interests. The colonial elite created a reconciliation and sustained a basic consensus regarding the general aims and concerns of the colonists. However, when met with friction, the elite’s alliance proved to be rather volatile; consequently, radical colonists emerged with much potency. For this reason it is unclear if there was a distinguished common goal amongst all of the groups within the colonies. I. In the winter of 1776, during American Revolution, the still young America faced three major dilemmas: their seemingly imminent defeat, the moral debate between the Whigs and the British loyalists, and the panic and confusion of the American public. In the years leading up to the American Revolution, there was a tense relationship between the colonists and their British rulers. Large gatherings in the colonies to discuss the grievances caused by the actions of the British were common. Patrick Henry applies the rhetorical strategies of allusions and repetition in his “Speech in the Virginia Convention” to assert that the colonists should believe fighting for their freedom and rights is necessary and that they must fight as soon as possible. Although Henry has rather radical beliefs in comparison to the other members of the Convention, he connects with them through religious and literary allusions that are able to convince them of his assertions. Two of the most important pieces of work in pre-revolution America were Thomas Paine’s Common Sense and Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death,”speech. The two writings were very effective with the points they addressed and their eventual outcome. However, the two patriots each used different tones. Patrick Henry used a fiery, yet passionate tone, Thomas Paine used a sarcastic, formal tone. In the end though, it was Patrick Henry’s tone which proved to be more effective in swaying American colonists towards independence.
The Declaration of Independence includes five parts. The five parts are the introduction, the preamble, the indictment of George III, the denunciation of the British people, and the conclusion. All five parts have a definite purpose and are very important to the document itself. The introduction serves to point readers to having a positive view of America and sets up for the rest of the Declaration.
