Why Is Brian Weak In The Hatchet

It is Brian’s reliance on others that makes him weak. In the book “hatchet” Brian is forced to survive in the Canadian wilderness. After the piolet suffers a fatal heart attack Brian crashes the plane and must rely on his knowledge and environment to survive. There are many reasons Brian’s reliance on other people makes him weak. Many of the reasons he survives it because of other things people have done like the hatchet was not brought or intended to because his mother gave it to him before the flight which he then forgot that he had it on him.

This is not a good thing to do as in most cases a small amount of wilderness knowledge is required which Brian seems to lack. In the book, he is described a trying many different berries without knowing what they are and immediately being sick. This shows Brian’s incompetence in wilderness survival.
He does not rely on his knowledge or common sense. Brian’s main factor to his survival is his incredible luck without which he would have certainly died. Brian can be described doing reckless actions such as eating unknown food and trying to achieve things out of his boundaries, all things that would have killed him if not for his luck. It is unlikely Brian would have survived his adventure without his luck.
Brian’s Reliance on unreliable knowledge, trial and error and reliance on luck should have killed him. While it can be said that Brian does eventually learn some of these things by the end of the book, he should have died long before then. However, there are many things showing he is not just physically but also mentally weak like when he tries to kill himself and when he struggles to learn how light reflects in water. In conclusion these factors make Brian weak without others
