In the world we live in today, we are surrounded by fake news and fake people. You truly have to look deep down inside a person to see who they are. F. Scott Fitzgerald is trying to tell us this through showing how beautiful people are on the outside but accompanied with ugliness in their actions. He presented Daisy, a gorgeous young woman whose voice can soothe anyone, having an affair with Gatsby. Fitzgerald also gave an expression by the title of the book, The Great Gatsby, but surely he wasn’t that great of a person. He also showed the Valley of Ashes was a disgusting place but everyone in there actually worked for their money and wasn’t handed an inheritance. It is a place between West Egg and New York City. Described as “ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens” (Fitzgerald 27). Tom belittles Mr. Wilson, who works hard for his wife and himself. Tom was handed his money down from his rich ancestors, he didn’t have to work for any of his money. An example of a deceptive action is when a person you, or someone, look up to a role model and they do the opposite you think they would do. For example, Ray Rice, former running back for the Baltimore Ravens. He was a huge star and had many children and fans looking up to him. When the news of him being kicked out of the NFL for beating his girlfriend and knocking her out cold surprised everyone. That really changed my opinion of him into a bad one. A person can have a beautiful face or great personality, but behind closed doors, they can be deceptive. You can’t always trust a person just on how they are on the outside. To truly know and trust someone, you must know them on a more inner level. A title of a person doesn’t represent how they actually are sometimes. “Great Gatsby” is his name, but was he truly great. Also, it can work the other way around. Something or someone might look beat down or just plain ugly but on the inside, they could be the happiest person in the world. All in all be careful to judge a person on what their appearance is. Get to
