Why Is Edgar Allan Poe Considered A Gothic Writer?

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most well-known authors throughout the whole world. A lot of people wonder, is he actually a gothic fiction writer? Some people think that he is a gothic fiction author because, throughout all of his different stories and poems, almost all of them follow the criteria needed to be met. Edgar Allan Poe as wrote over fifty different stories and short stories, some of the people’s favorites would include, “The Mask of Red Death”, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, and “The Cask of Amontillado”. There are multiple different examples and reasons of why Edgar All Poe is a gothic literature author, but I will only list three. In order to be a gothic fiction author, your story should fit into those four categories. Poe fits well in most of all his stories, maybe minus one or two here and there. In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Poe demonstrates a great example of characters because the protagonist starts off reasonable, and slowly throughout the story moves into the “mysteries of life”. The protagonist, the narrator, who remains nameless, started off seeming like a rational person, and in the goes mad, and some would even say insane. Which fits perfectly with the gothic literature criteria. Another example of why Poe is a gothic writer is because of his short story, “The Cask of Amontillado”. In this story, the narrator, Montresor, also the protagonist, is seeking revenge against his “frenemy”, Fortunato. Even though it is Montresor trying to seek revenge, the conflict is Montresor versus himself. In almost all of Poe’s stories, person versus self remains to be the conflict. In most stories however it does not meet the criteria, it still really affects how the story is like. In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Poe shows that Montresor, his rational self is up against his irrational, insane
