Both sides are very valid arguments. I firmly believe that Macbeth was controlled by fate. He was cursed by witches at the beginning, it set the rest of his life in stone. What the witches said would happen happened and the seems like a pretty good picture of fate. Fate is defined as “the development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power.
"Macbeth" is a play written by William Shaksphere. In the play Macbeth is a man who is given phrophecies by witches, and one of them was that he would become king. He decided to act on this phrophecy and make it happen on his own. He did this by killing king Duncan, a well-loved king of Ireland. Macbeth tried to forge his own future by commiting the crime of murder on his king.
One major theme in the play “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare is fate versus free will. The difference between fate and free will is one decides your future, and one is your full consent/knowledge used when making a decision. Macbeth’s decisions are in his mind his fate and what he is destined to do, but doesn’t he know that his decisions are free will? When the witches reveal Macbeth’s prophecy to him, they reveal a destiny that cannot be avoided. It is called a prophecy for a reason because it tells the future.
A man, goaded by his wife, murders time and again to satisfy his hunger for power, slowly driving himself into insanity through his ambition. Ambition, both a blessing and a curse, lead Macbeth to a series of betrayals and murders of and by those closest to him. Conspiring with his wife in Act 1, Lady Macbeth had convinced Macbeth that by killing Duncan, King of Scotland, he could become the next King. He and Lady Macbeth planned the whole thing; who they would frame, how they would get past the guards, which one of them should be the one to do it, and how would they hide the knives once the deed had been accomplished. At the last second, Macbeth appeared to have a change of heart, but then his wife taunted him, insulting his manhood.
This fate and option of free will, is seen throughout the play yet shows itself prominent in Macbeth. With a strong presence throughout the book fate and free will finds its way in every aspect of the story. The first depiction of fate and free will in the play is the interaction between the witches and Macbeth. This instance is the start of the paradoxical path the story follows. The witches tell Macbeth his fate is to be king and that no man born of woman will be able to harm his life.
Macbeth was a good and loyal warrior for king Duncan but after he heard the witches predictions, it changed the person inside him. This play is from one of the best writer of all time William Shakespeare. The play is “The Tragedy of Macbeth". It's a summary about how Macbeth became king in the eleventh century and after he took the throne.
As described before, In Shakespeare’s time, in the Elizabethan era, it was almost unanimously believed that life is predestined and is controlled by impersonal forces (Letterpile, 2011). This point raises a very important question that relates to how Shakespeare explores fate and human will in all of his plays. In Act I Scene III, Macbeth tries to reject the witches’ prophecy that he will be king hereafter, and says that he will leave everything to chance. He says that “if chances will have me king, why chance may crown me without my stir” (I.iii.143-144). In the beginning of the play, Macbeth rejects the witches’ prophecy and says that he will not do any actions to achieve this position.
As proved by Macbeth’s success to become the Thane of Cawdor, the prophecies are Macbeth’s fate; they will be the outcomes of his life, but how they will come to be is dependent on Macbeth’s own choices. When Macbeth shares the prophesies with his wife, Lady Macbeth, she helps him murder King Duncan in order to gain the throne. The witches had predicted that Macbeth would be king but they hadn’t said when or how. It is Macbeth’s own choice to murder Duncan because of his deep desire to become king. Macbeth wants to protect his power and eliminate all enemies that may come in the way.
The play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, is seen as one of Shakespeare 's greatest tragedies. It deals with a man named Macbeth, who is introduced as a brave, strong war hero. He has the respect of the king and his peers. The predictions of three witches that Macbeth will become king begin Macbeth 's descent into his own downfall. The play is set in Scotland, written for King James I.
Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth, analyzes the tragic downfall of a man who pursued his prophecy given to him by three witches, and suffered the downfall because of it. Told his power was inevitable, Macbeth explores the idea of murdering the King to achieve his goal of becoming King himself. Macbeth continually faces this, contemplating the moral issue of committing murder to in turn, fulfill his powerful destiny. While facing this internal conflict, Lady Macbeth developes an influence over Macbeth as well. Driven by her own desire to be Queen, Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to commit the murder, by challenging his manhood and often reminding him that it is, in fact, his destiny.
In the play Macbeth, the lead role “Macbeth” was given a prophecy. Part of the prophecy stated that Macbeth would be king. Macbeth made decisions to make the prophecies come true, rather than believing that his actions were predetermined. Shakespeare, the author of Macbeth, probably believed that fate is never predetermined. I believe Macbeth’s actions were the cause of his own decisions, and that he did what he could to make his prophecies come true.
Have you heard of fate? Do you believe in fate? Well in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, fate plays an important role in Macbeth’s life. Fate is something that unavoidably befalls a person.
Fate Versus Free Will In Macbeth Fate versus free will is a theme well known throughout literature and in life as well. Is life controlled by fate, or are people’s lives dependent on the choices they make? In Macbeth, Shakespeare emphasizes the idea of fate vs. freewill, indicating that both elements play a role in the lives of individuals, as well as society as a whole. The main character, Macbeth’s, life is a combination of fate and his conscious decisions. The witches in Macbeth can control the fates of many, but only to a point.
Some of the themes in Macbeth that are relevant today is the coruption of power, ambition, and fate. Corruption of power is relevant to the 21st century because like Lady Macbeth, when someone gets a feel of being powerful it gets to their head and they crave more and always want to be more powerful. Ambition connects with the 21st century because every one has to be determined for what they want in life and have to be willing to do whatever it has to do to achieve what they want, like when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth did what they needed to do to be great and powerful like they desired. Lastly, fate is relevant to the 21st century, because everyone has their own fate and whether they accept it like Banquo or they try and fight it like Macbeth, fate always wins in its
