Why Is Hamlet's First Soliloquy

Hamlet's soliloquies reveal a lot about his character. However they mainly show that he is ethical, a little undecided or indecisive and it shows how loyal he is. These characteristics are shown through the ways he insults himself for not following his beliefs, his constant need to reassure himself that he is doing the right thing and the way he does what he promised his father he would do even when he didn’t think it was the right thing to do. In the beginning of the play, “Hamlet” Hamlet is told that his father is dead. Soon after receiving the news, Hamlet's father's ghost comes to tell him how he died and gives Hamlet directions. Hamlet is told that he needs to get revenge for his father death by killing his uncle. Hamlets accepts this right away. In Act 1, Hamlet says, “So, uncle there you are. Now to my word: / It is ““Adieu, adieu! Remember me.”” / I have it sworn’t.” (1.5 61). Hamlets swears to complete the request his father's ghost has given him. This shows how Hamlet is loyal. He starts out by saying, “To be, or not to be, that is the question..” (3.1 119) Hamlet is asking if it's better to be alive or to just end it all and be dead. At first he thinks suicide is the answer for all of his problems that he is facing but then he starts thinking about it more and he starts to change his mind. He says, “Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer / The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, / Or to take arms against a sea of troubles..” (3.1 121) Hamlet starts thinking that suicide isn't the best thing for him to do and plans on going through with his original plan, killing his uncle. Hamlet being on the fence with killing himself or staying alive shows how indecisive he is. He can’t decide to go through with the suicide or not and he can’t decide what’s better for him.
