The Defeat of an Italian Major In the story “In Another Country” by Ernest Hemingway there is a Italian major that the main character meets and he has a nub for a hand, no longer a good fencer, and his wife dies. This the leads on to prove that this man is indeed defeated because he then chooses not to believe in bravery, he has no confidence that the rehabilitation machine will fix his hand, and he can’t cope with that he will die worthless or meaningless and that is the exact opposite of the Hemingway code or “Being destroyed is inevitable while defeat is optional”. He is already destroyed and he slowly becomes defeated in the end because everything he valued is gone. How he was the “greatest fencer in Italy” and isn't anymore do to the war and his wound or set back his hand has become because he doesn't put forth the effort to restore his hand so he can fence again. The major has also lost his wife which is the most important thing to him and it is gone so now he has nothing to live for due to the fact that one he no longer is or can be the “greatest fencer in Italy” and two he lost his pride and joy which was his wife and what he was going to do when he got home was marry her and he no longer has that privilege because she is dead from pneumonia.
