Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: Should it be read and taught today? For many years there has been and still is a controversial debate over whether this book should be read and taught to children today. This novel follows a young white boy named Huck and his black slave friend, Jim. Despite their racial difference they both have one thing in common which is their longing for freedom. Although freedom means different things to both of them, the story follows the adventures they have together. The first thing I want to address is that banning the book altogether would be in violation of The First Amendment of the United States Constitution. This is true however I believe that teenagers in this generation need to be exposed to the harsh reality of how slaves and black people were treated in those days. Also I want to point out that that word was normal back then. Just like we call them African Americans now, they called them niggers back then and it was just the name for people of a black race. Another point I want to make is that this book represents slavery and slavery is a part of US History and shouldn’t just be erased. It should be taught so people understand the horrible things black people experienced and that it should never happen again. In conclusion this is a very beautiful story of a strong bond between Huck, a young white boy, and Jim, an older black slave. There are many other characters that tie into their adventures but it’s special to read and see how their friendship strengthens through the hardships and trials they face. Huck and Jim both have kind hearts and a concern for other people as well as loyalty to each other. With that said, this is why I believe The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a true
