Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote a marvelous story on a washwoman of whom he very much admired. The washwoman had done her job for many decades and when she met Singer, she was well into her seventies. The work she had done was very admirable and her results were always outstanding. The admiration he felt towards her is only something you feel when someone or something truly inspires you. The reasons why he admired her made me admire her too. One characteristic Singer admired about her was her unbelievable strength. She did the hard task of doing laundry back in the early 1900s. Knowing this, the washwoman did it anyway, but it cost her one very important thing. She lost the love and respect from her son. He was ashamed of her, but she was strong. She was strong enough to realize that it was too late to earn his love and respect back. She was strong enough to move on with her life, but still kept him in her heart and mind. The second characteristic he admired about her was her pride in her work. She could’ve begged and been a burden on society, but no. She was proud to be a washwoman. She could’ve stopped just to win back the love and respect of her son, but she didn’t care because it was something she wanted to do. The third characteristic he admired about her was that she was her dedication to her work and the families she worked for. An incident Singer told us is when she became very ill. She was gone for two months, but she finally returned. What happened was she got sick, but she persevered through and completed the the laundry.
