There are many Deaf issues that I believe need to be addressed to the public. The public would benefit from understanding what Deaf individuals need to have a successful life. I believe that the ignorance that many hearing individuals have create a burden on Deaf individuals. Due to the lack of knowledge that many hearing individuals have in regards to Deaf individuals many hearing individuals would benefit from gaining knowledge about Deaf education, the importance of sign language as a natural language, and the need for educated as well as certified interpreters.
Our society needs to understand the importance of providing an educational system that is designed to help Deaf individuals succeed. It has become more of a trend for Deaf individuals to attend mainstream schools, therefore educators need to …show more content…

There needs to be an understanding in society that Deaf individuals natural language is sign language and therefore sign language should be established before the threshold of five years of age. Unfortunately the medical field believes there needs to be a push to make Deaf individuals as “hearing” as possibly. But in reality the push should be for language development. Also the society would benefit from understanding that both sign language and speech can be taught together rather than choosing one over the other. The medical professionals that educate hearing parents with Deaf children should become more knowledgeable about the need for early language acquisition, such as LEAD-K and the detrimental impacts not having a language can cause on Deaf individuals. Therefore, if medical professionals gain knowledge in the Deaf community as well as Deaf culture and understand the benefits of sign language and encourage parents to teach and expose their children to sign language Deaf children will be positively
