The Necklace written by Guy de Maupassant was first published in 1884. In the story character Mathilde Loisel appears to be beautiful, but could not afford fine clothes. Mathilde Loisel was married to clerk in the Ministry of Education, Monsieur Loisel, who invited her to an affair. Mathilde Loisel always wanted jewelry and dress, where she did not go to the affair, unless she gets a suitable outfit. Throughout the story, Mathilde Loisel was greedy, selfish, and irresponsible in many reasons. Mathilde Loisel, who was in middle class, yet chose expensive outfit, where she was being greedy. As Monsieur Loisel asked price for the outfit, she answered, “I am not sure exactly, but I think with 400 francs I could manage it” (Maupassant, 227). This shows, Mathilde Loisel wanted something extremely expensive for an outfit compared to her social class. She was also not satisfied with the expensive outfit and asked for jewelry to make her look rich.
