Dreams are human aspirations and what people work for their whole lives, usually. We think that, normally, dreams are always achievable if we work hard enough, but in reality, some dreams are not possible. The Great Gatsby is a 1995 novel by American writer F Scott Fitzgerald about love, greed, and social classes set in the jazz age on New Jersey Long Island.The Great Gatsby addresses how dreams are not always achievable, no matter how much work someone puts into them. The book shows this with three people's dreams: Gatsby's dream to win Daisy's hand in marriage, Myrtle's dream to increase her social standing, and Nick's goal of making it in the bond business.

She was married to George Wilson, who was a middle-class mechanic. Myrtle wanted to increase her social standing and the amount of wealth she had. The author shows that Myrtle is materialistic in chapter 2, page 36, with this quote: "He had on a dress." suit and patent leather shoes, and I couldn’t keep my eyes off him," and how she likes the finer things with this "I’ve got to get. A massage and a wave and a collar for the dog, and one of those cute little ashtrays where you touch a spring, and a wreath with a black silk bow". These show that even though she can't afford these finer items, she's willing to put her marriage in jeopardy just to try and live as she can. Thus, her dream of living a life of luxury is just impossible since she wasn’t given the same opportunities as others and sacrificed more than she gained. Myrtle was a bad person; she lied to her husband to live like a higher-class person, used other people's money to afford these items, and ruined her husband's life.
