What does resilience really mean to you? The literal definition to resilience is the ability to cope with problems and setbacks. In the story Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, she shows us all different kind of ways that the characters in her story used the skills that Kendra Cherry was talking about, to help them out of every situation. In this story it shows how certain situations affect people in different ways and how each person goes through seven skills. The characteristic that Louie undergoes is the skill of Strong Problem-Solving.
Christopher McCandless, the main focus from Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild observes the factors that impacted Chris McCandless to his unfortunate death at the age of 24 in August of 1992 on Stampede Trail, Alaska in attempts to live off the land. Richard Russo who grew up to write his own memoir Elsewhere describing his “American childhood, as lived in the Fifties by a lower-middle class that seems barely to exist anymore” (Russo, 12, 2012). Russo grew up with his mother, Jean Russo, who had Obsessive compulsion disorder, which he tries make sense of the guilt associated with his mother after her death. The two had been impacted developmentally different by the chronosystem and interaction of the microsystems. The unalike interactions explain the differing outcome of the two.
Being resilient in tough situations can be substantial in some cases. To be resilient means one has great wit, especially in a 'finding a way out ' scenario. It can even be the key to survival, as can be shown in a short excerpt from Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. It gives a great example of resilience based off of a situation that Louie Zamperini finds himself and crew in as their plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. What characteristic is most important in helping Louie survive?
Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. Various characteristics are needed to be resilient. In the book, Trouble by Gary D. Schmidt, Henry loses his brother, Franklin. But, Henry is able to stay in control of the things going on in his life. He has a plan of what he wants to do; climb Katahdin.
The short story, “Indiana Education” by Sherman Alexie, a Native American writer and filmmaker, is told in the first person, revisiting the experiences of Victor, and his schooling from first to the twelfth grades both on and off. Each academic year was a snapshot of an experience, on the differences of what it means to be a non-white student in an area that still struggled under the effects of colonization. Even though it’s been hundreds of years since European explorers came to North America, settlers, and the government pushed for western expansion into Indian territories, Native Americans slowly saw their land and culture diminish as they were relocated to reservations. Feelings of oppression become obvious for victor.
Written by Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 is a nonfiction literature explaining the beauty of written books. The story is set in a dystopian future explaining the life of a fireman named Montag whose job is to burn books: no questions asked. During the book, Montag destroys beautiful books without reading them or knowing anything about them. In Fahrenheit 451, “destruction of beauty” is a frequent theme found throughout the novel. “There must be something in books, things we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there” (Bradbury 48).
Many people believe that resilience is only about survival with strength, but really resilience can be surviving through any means. In the story, "Unbroken" a man named Louis Zamperini and his friends crashed a ship during World War II. After the crash, Louis, and two others by the name of Mac and Phil survive and must use resilience to survive in the ocean and to get back. Louis Zamperini's most essential characteristic of resilience however is strong problem-solving skills, with him being able to fix most problems they come in contact with and with the other two being the opposite and needing their problems fixed.
The main character in The Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie is Hercule Poirot. Hercule is a Sicilian private investigator who is faced with a challenge. Everyone on the train appears to have airtight alibis, but some must be lying. In this book Hercule has to see through the lies, discover who is telling the truth and determine the motive behind the murder. At the end of Murder on the Ortient Express, Hercule Poirot shows the passengers on the train that revenge can be an acceptable motive for murder.
1940 in America brought us Bugs Bunny in “A Wild Hare,” president Franklin Delano Roosevelt for a third term, the discovery of Stone Age paintings, and And Then There Were None. Over the Atlantic in Victorian England circa 1902, Lord Salisbury retired from being Prime Minister, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandria were coronated, the Olympic Games were held, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published The Hound of the Baskervilles. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are two top examples of mystery thrillers.
In the drama “The Blizzard,” Neil shows a strong example of being a comedic hero. Neil shows the traits of disorder, ordinary stature, and he is detached emotionally. Everything is out of order, they have no phones or radio. Neil is expecting his brother and sister-in-law. Neil should turn Natasha and Salim away, but he does not value his own safety.
He doesn’t think about the problems at hand. He makes split-second decisions. This caused multiple problems to encase his life. Neil didn’t learn, at any point, to think about the problem. Instead he though his only option was to kill himself.
[He] does not notice the police car… follow him.” This one event, mixed with the stereotype the protagonist has thrown upon him by the cop, seals his fate. All three of these situations foreshadow the ironic and deadly situation that the poor lost man is about to find himself involved. It is these subtle hints to his death that not only add suspense to the plot, but also hold a key importance in conflict development. W.D. Valgardson uses many great elements of fiction to build plot and conflict, as well as teach the lesson of not making snap judgments in his short story Identities.
Hardy, Concato & Gill (2004) stated that resilient people are those who display “the capacity to remain well, recover, or even thrive in face of adversity”. Masten (2001) as mentioned that they are the ordinary person dealing with the challenges and tragedies of everyday real life. For instance, the response of many Americans to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and individuals’ efforts to rebuild their lives shows their resiliency. Being resilient does not mean that a person does not have or had experience difficulty or distress; the emotional pain and sadness are common but the path to resilience is likely to involve considerable emotional distress. Resilience is not a trait which people either has or do not have whereas it involves
A survivor is someone who can take their problem and make it so they are no longer problems but instead something that will benefit them. Someone that will have moments where they think that they can not continue but overall is still very positive. Some that knows what to do in a time of need they learn from their mistakes. Someone that is somewhat fearless by using their fear to push them further. Someone that is independent and dependent at the same time.
