Because the family helped him he helped the family by protecting them from the cobras and Nag. He protected him from the cobras and Nag by killing them. He killed them by waiting until they came into the bathroom and then he stalked them and when he was ready he killed them. The boy became his best friend and then the family allowed Rikki-Tikki to live with them. The father was ok with Rikki-Tikki living there, but the mother was worried because she thought Rikki-Tikki was going to hurt Teddy because he was
