Taylor Swift’s story involves a humble background coupled with a serious ambition. Today the country/pop singer has amassed a fan base of over 150 million online followers. Now, she may not have brought 2000 new words to the English language, but – like a certain 16th Century lyrical poet – she has an uncanny ability to relate to audiences from all walks of life. There is no other way of putting it, she can be boring. Ex-boyfriend, and 1D lead ,Harry Styles reportedly left Swift, according to Cosmopolitan Magazine, because she was “f$#king boring.” Even though this was in reference to her ‘low-key’ lifestyle, the truth is that her largely autobiographical songs reflect her lifestyle, sometimes anyway. Without drawing away from Taylor’s success, it has to be acknowledged that listening to breakup song after breakup song does get repetitive. Contrastingly though, the sales figures alone speak for themselves with “1989” already having sold 4.5 million copies after just 19 weeks of release, clearly her 150 million strong following does not share this mutual feeling. Furthermore, in deciding whether Swift can be considered Shakespearean in influence and popularity, it must also be noted that Shakespeare was not considered great during his time; it was only in later centuries that his reputation improved to the heights it is today. Therefore, it would be unreasonable to discount the possibility that Taylor Swift could be the modern day Shakespeare, merely in light of her not being innovative enough
