The 1803 Louisiana Purchase contributed to a greater sense of independence and nationhood in America because it granted America control of a vast amount of land, therefore, showing that it was becoming a world power. Once Spain ceded it to France, America bought it for fifteen million dollars. This meant that they had control of the navigation on the Mississippi River and access to the Gulf of Mexico. They were therefore able to navigate the Great Lakes and the Northeast to New Orleans without having to have another country’s permission to use the ports. The land purchased nearly doubled the size of the United States, providing more room and contributing to Jefferson’s view of an agrarian society.

Many Americans were convinced in manifest destiny, which is the idea that the United States had the right and duty to rule North America from Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. Although it has its origins from the Aztec Empire, the holiday is widely celebrated in Latin America and even some parts of the United States.

In October of 1492, Portuguese explorer Christopher Columbus landed by ship in the “New World” which is today known as the Americas. Many people believe the holiday that honors him annually in October has great meaning behind it. However, I believe Columbus day should not be celebrated. Christopher Columbus was not the first person ever to discover the Americas, he abused natives on their own land, and the holiday isn’t celebrated in the way it should be. The agreement made the U.S. expand by 40% (15 states). It allowed navigation along the Mississippi River, and it connected to New Orleans. There was many different changes after the Louisiana Purchase to make U.S. a better place and people thought more nationally.

It was deemed a Federal Holiday in the United States in 1941. Over the past century, the holiday became a significant day of patriotism. Activities such as parades, barbeques, and fireworks have become Independence Day traditions in many states all over the country. Fireworks were the earliest form of 4th of July celebration, dating back to the first Independence Day in 1777 during the Revolutionary War.
The Spaniards made a big impact in the Americas. They killed many Incas,Tainos, and Aztecs. These populations lost many including their emperors. On the Spaniard 's side they had power by killing Atahualpa and Montezuma they could create colonies and take riched back to their country. The Spaniards weren 't the only ones to look for riches in the New World.
The day represents one of the greatest injustices in Human history. Dedicating a day to Columbus means that we support his acts. We support him and his orders that led to the killing of an entire nation. That is absurd! This day should be dedicated to the native Americans to honor their History and Culture.
There are many opinions about Columbus Day and whether we should celebrate it as a holiday. I believe the extent in which we should celebrate Columbus Day is just acknowledging him rather than dedicating a federal holiday to him. I would propose to celebrate “Indigenous People’s Day” or “Native Americans’ Day”. My opinion comes from his actual discovery of th New World and his actions after he settled in North America. One reason why I think we should not celebrate Columbus day to the extent of a federal holiday is because of the thinking that Columbus was the one who discovered North America.
Europeans began exploring the Americas in late 15th century. This had many effects on both the land of the Americas and the Native Americans that inhabited them. Many of the Native American cultures perished with the coming if the Europeans while some survived. A good deal of the Native American cultures that did survive, were very small. The Europeans did not mean to find the Americas, in fact, they were on a voyage to find a new route to Asia and The Indies.
