In Chapter 9 of the book “Major Problems in California History” the authors use the key term “Hollywood” which is known as the “film colony” where movie stars lived and played. The author uses the term “Hollywood” as life in a movie by stating, “The existence of “Hollywood” as a residential community proved that the kind of life depicted on the silver screen could be found in reality.” Also, the author uses the key term “Hollywood” as a glamorous version of the American Dream by stating, “Ordinary people became acquainted with the movie stars’ opulent lifestyle through stories and photographs in fan magazines. Another way the key term “Hollywood” could be considered is as a resort city also named “Hollywood” located in southeastern Florida.
During the 1940’s and 1950’s, The House Un-American Activities Committee targeted hollywood in fear socialists and communists were working in the industry and would take control of American culture. HUAC’s interest in hollywood began because it was believed there was a large amount of communists in that industry. Movies and articles were made on communism and how it was a threat to America, such as how to spot a communist. Ronald Reagan was president during that time and he did not believe in communism, but he also didn’t believe communists were using their philosophies in movies to influence America. Edward Dmytryk along with other film directors were questioned about being communists, they became known as the hollywood ten.
Ishonn Shockley Mrs. Koeller English III 16 February 2017 The Hollywood Ten was a group of extremely talented directors, scriptwriters, and actors whose lives were ruined by one man. They and hundreds of others had fallen from their positions because of the political gain of the HUAC and Joseph McCarthy. The Hollywood Ten stood up and rebelled against a violation to their rights.
After getting her BFA from the Otis Art Institute, she went on to challenge the hegemonic ways of Hollywood film. This led to the creation of ASCO’s No Movies. No Movies was intended to critique the Hollywood industry. The author also mentions that ASCO’s
Walt Whitman shows a connection between the senses and science in his poem, “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer, by expressing his thoughts of the astronomers class and his thoughts when he experiences the stars for himself.” The connection begins after Whitman first starts to discuss the astronomer’s lecture, stating “I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide and measure them” (Whitman 3), however he later writes, “I became tired and sick” (Whitman 6). His quote gives the impression that he is not as engrossed with the lecture as his surrounding audience, whom applauds at the words of the knowledgeable astronomer. It is not until the narrator leaves the class and steps out into the mystic night that a connection is made between
The HUAC became a permanent committee around 1945-1947. It was the first government committee to investigate the entertainment industry. Its actions helped set a precedent for future government investigations of the entertainment industry, creating a culture of fear and mistrust in Hollywood. This legacy can still be seen in the reluctance of some filmmakers to discuss politics or take a stand on controversial issues. In addition, the HUAC's long-lasting impact also includes its role in promoting anti-Communist sentiment in the United States and its effects on the careers of many actors and directors who were blacklisted due to their involvement with Pro-Russian
Forms of entertainment prevalent today, including movies and musicals, are the same forms of entertainment Americans in the early decades of the twentieth century. It wasn’t uncommon for those in the 1920s to use extra income to visit a movie theater, or those in the 1930s to gather to watch a performance in their town to provide a sense of relief from daily hardship. Across these years, there were ample reasons, both good and bad, to absorb multiple forms of entertainment, but it all served a similar purpose: to provide a good time for the audience. Due to both disposable incomes and the need for an “escape” during this period, Hollywood saw a large increase in prevalence, which caused a larger variety of media to be created. In movies released
Another example has to deal with that fact that they accused people from Hollywood or people of the higher class. These people would then be known among the people and they would know not to hire certain people. According to History.com, “Pressured by Congress, the Hollywood establishment started a blacklist policy, banning the work of about 325 screenwriters, actors and directors who had not been cleared by the committee.” This clarifies how people in Hollywood were being betrayed and be ousted of jobs and opportunities that may have came if it were not being put on the
Movie stars also ensued and made millions of dollars, as critics bashed all aspects of the entertainment industry. With these new forms of technology and hobbies, American culture was blooming with one set grouping of tastes and language with less division of other
Those working within Hollywood became targets, accused of surreptitiously publishing Communist propaganda within their work that could ‘poison’ the minds of those watching at home (RedScare Propaganda, 1950). Hollywood became the next in a list of many targeted groups after the HAUC made a claim in 1938 that “Hollywood was pervasive with Communism” (History.com, 2017). Those who were investigated ultimately met the fate of the Hollywood blacklist, meaning they would no longer be able to do credible work in the industry, costing hundreds of families their livelihoods and reputations. The most famous of those questioned became known as the Hollywood ten after they refused to comply with the subpoena and answer questions regarding their association with the Communist Party (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2017). Dalton Trumbo, the most famous of the ten called the trials “the beginning of the American concentration camp … with no man so low or foul as a Communist and anyone holding slightly leftist views suspect” (Trumbo, 2014).
Most Native American tribes were riddled with diseases, often wiping out the whole tribe, or mostly all except for a few. Those few left were often younger, and had to reinvent themselves and their tribe. Often, the survivors of several different groups would come together to form a different group. Disease wasn’t the only threat to the native people, as many were enslaved and often wouldn’t survive the harsh conditions. The enslavement, the transport of illnesses, and natives refusing to give up their land took a toll on the relationship between the Natives and Europeans.
Without the decision to move the film making associations to Hollywood, the movie industry might not be where it is today. A great population of people migrated to Los Angeles in search for bigger and better production opportunities. In 1910, a movie director,
In a different view, the movie industry affected the 1920’s all through the modern times by providing viewers amazing entertainment. All in all, ranging from studios, to movie stars, to the luxurious lifestyles of the stars, Hollywood is one unique place that will never be
There is no doubt that Hollywood has many influences on society especially on young age. The term “Hollywood” refers to the film industry where located to the west and northwest of downtown Los Angeles, California (“Where is Hollywood,” n.d.). Not only in Los Angeles that television shows and movies of Hollywood are popular but also all around the country and worldwide.
