“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government” (Bair). This quote, given by Thomas Jefferson in 1809, demonstrates the United States’ obligation and duty to stand up for human life. Life is the most sacred right guaranteed to Americans by the Constitution. Our government was founded to be a protector for all Americans no matter how big or small. However, almost ironically, the “good government” of the United States would face an identity crisis in the 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade which ruled in favor of federally legalizing abortion. Murder, manslaughter, and abortion are all labels that describe the selfish act of taking another life for personal pleasure. The abortion debate is not one of science but of life: should mothers have the right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy? In my opinion, no. Aborting a fetus should be considered murder and be treated as murder. Killing an unborn child is no different from murdering an adult. Why is it legal in the United States to voluntarily kill an unborn baby who cannot care for itself but illegal to murder an elderly individual who cannot care for his or herself? This is just one of many contradictions and flaws present in United States law. For instance, in 2004, Congress passed the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. The act made a fetus or embryo a legal victim in the eyes of the law. This means if a baby is injured or killed in a federal crime, it counts as a victim in court. For example, if a pregnant mother is killed, the murderer would be tried for two killings (United States).
