Why Should An Acid-Based Titrations Be Carried Out?

925 Words4 Pages

Titrations are a technique used within modern industrial laboratories to measure the proportions of chemicals within a solution. It is a simple and useful method and due to its versatility it can be used within many areas and aspects of science industries to either develop or analyse key chemical compounds. Despite the preparation of standard solutions and the carrying out of titrations being the same in modern industrial laboratories, the methods in which they are carried out can differ.
Different ways titrations and standard solutions can be carried out?
There are 6 types of titrations that frequently take place within industrial laboratories all of which are useful for specific purposes and experiments/results. However the two main titrations …show more content…

Many indicators can be used in order to carry out this titration a few of these include litmus paper, methyl red and bromophenel blue which one is used in order to carry out the titration depends on the pH range of the acid and base used. Using the correct indicator makes it easier to achieve accurate results. The end result of this titration is determined by the colour in which the solution changes to.
Redox titrations are carried out between an oxidising agent and a reducing agent through the use of a reduction-oxidation reaction. The indicator used within this reaction is usually sodium diphenylamine this changes the colour of the solution from orange to green, a potentiometer or redox indicator is used at the end of the titration to determine the end result.
Another titration also used within modern industrial lavatories includes the gas phase titration this is carries out during the gas phase as a method for determining reactive species, during this titration gaseous ozone is titrated along with nitrogen oxide, when the reaction is complete the remaining titrant and product are quantified this determines the amount of analyte within the original sample. This particular titration has some advantages over other types of titrations these include; the measurement does not rely on path length or linear change and it also useful for samples …show more content…

This particular titration requires complexometric indicators which form weak complexes with the analyte. A common use of this titration is with calcium and magnesium ions.
During assay titrations serial dilutions are completed on a fixed ratio of a sample repeatedly until the final dilution proves no positive result for the existence of a virus, the infected cells are then inspected under a microscope to determine the overall value whether that be positive or negative.
How are preparations of standard solutions and titration carried out in modern industrial laboratories?
The versatility of a titration is important as this means they can be carried in all aspects of industries that use products with pH values to develop or analyse key chemical compounds. Some examples of industries that use titrations include:
• Wineries - This involves using titrations in order to determine the acidity which consequently determines the flavour and quality of the wine helping the winemaker to decide whether the wine requires additional ingredients to improve or maintain the overall quality and flavour. This type of titration can be carried out easily as it is simple, inexpensive and requires minimal equipment.
