Why should students be required to take an arts class? Arts is where students can show their artistic abilities or their musical talents to everyone else. Students should be required to take an arts class because those classes can open up more career opportunities, the students in the class work together in groups, and the student can show their ability to do different things that maybe someone else can’t do. The first reason as of why the class should be required is the class could open up more career opportunities in the future.
Why Music Should Stay For years, schools across America have provided electives to their students as a fun and challenging way to get them into different environments. Students have been able to do anything from Cooking to Theater because the options have been provided. But in recent years, some schools have dropped their electives and replaced them with more boring core classes, and I think it’s time to take a stance and save the electives. More specifically, music electives. Music electives have tons of benefits, including helping students’ grades and test scores, stretching their cognitive capabilities, and it sets students up for success in the future.
Without these programs, students would not have as many resources to receive the positive outcomes that music provides, and many would feel quite lost without them. Art Education Cuts in American Schools In a recent study taking place in 2008 we have discovered that eighty percent of schools nationwide have made budget cuts to their public education programs (Boyd 1).Why are eighty percent of public schools facing funding decreases and how are they cutting out arts programs to keep funds in education? Throughout America, school systems have decided to reduce the budget of or completely cut the art programs in public schools. (don’t know where to put this) With the recent economic downturn in 2007-2009, states have made budget cuts in public K-12 education systems. With the statewide budgets being decreased, less money is available to be spread amongst the individual counties.
In a study titled ‘Music as an Aid For Postoperative Recovery in Adults’, performed on hospital patients, groups were subject to music therapy before, during, and after surgery. Across seven thousand patients, music decreased the patients’ stress and pain the majority of the time. Stress and pain levels even reduced during surgery (The Lancet). Music therapy involves other factors besides music, but simply attempting to boost one’s mood while listening to music can have a dramatic affect. Another experiment on the effects of music on stress was done by Yuna Ferguson and Kennon Sheldon.
In many public schools, music education programs are being terminated, due to budget cuts and governmental program reforms; while some believe that the arts are secondary to courses such as math and science, it has been proven that musical education helps students to improve skills such as project management, team building, effective time management, leadership, cooperation and collaboration.
