Jonas began to rise to collect his schoolbooks. He thought it surprising that they hadn’t talked about his dream at length before the thank you.Perhaps they found it as confusing as he had. he Giver by Lois Lowry, is a great book that is in danger of being banned. Los Angeles School District and other schools are trying to silence their students by taking the book away from the reach of their students and teachers. And although there are many reasons why Los Angeles School District should and should not ban The Giver, there is only one correct answer to this argument. If the district bans the book, what’s stopping them from depriving us from more learning resources, later on in the future? The Giver by Lois Lowry is a text that should not be banned from the students of the Los Angeles United School District because this book helps educate students about more adult topics, there are more books that should be banned instead of the giver, and censorship violates our first amendment right as a student.
Banning the book would be critical for parents and teachers, because they will have to teach their children and students about some uncomfortable topics, with no introduction. Yet, the Giver helps introduce these topics by turning it into a normal conversation between Jonas and his parents. Although LAUSD is trying to ban the giver for having explicit scenes like Jonas trying to convince Fiona to get into the bath, the book Of Mice and Men have constant uses of ‘son of a bitch’ and there are also many violent scenes like when Curly and Lennie are fighting. Of Mice and Men was a good example for a book with a lot of explicit violence but the book The Color Purple had very sexually explicit scenes as well, which could be a topic that parents don’t want their children to know or learn about. “Challenged in Burke Country (2008) schools in Morganton, NC by parents concerned about the homosexuality, rape, and incest portrayed in the book.” (-Banned and challenged books, “The Color Purple”) Banning The Giver is already one problem that should be addressed, but still letting students and teachers read The Color Purple? The Color Purple has many sexually explicit scenes, including when Celie explaines that she has been raped by her father when she was barely fourteen. The Giver may be explicit for 7th and younger but LAUSD should not ban the book before checking other more explicit
