Should the President be Elected by Popular Vote?

It is the year 1824, the two main candidates for president are John Quincy Adams against Andrew Jackson. Jackson has raked in 153,544 popular votes and 99 electoral votes. Adams has received 108,740 popular votes and 84 electoral votes. Jackson got the most votes in both categories, so you would think that he would win, right. Well you’re wrong. The presidential elections aren’t run by popular vote, because in that case Jackson would’ve won. the elections are run by the Electoral College, and they don’t pick the president by votes, they look at other factors. How do you think the elections should be run?
Many people like the idea of popular vote in fact,70% of Americans would prefer to elect their president by popular vote. There are many different reasons for this, such as how the candidates could save money on …show more content…

By making all votes equal, we would be following the instructions set in the Constitution. In Amendment xii of the Constitution it states ,”The electors shall meet in their respective States and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President… and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President…The person having the greatest number of votes for President shall be President...” In other words, the electors will vote by ballot for the President, then the candidate with the most votes will become President.
In contrast, there are also people who disapprove of popular vote and encourage the Electoral College to remain in place.
