From the moment I started playing T-ball in kindergarten a flame was lit and my love for the sport was born. Even from a young age I was determined to be a part of every play, even if that meant running across the field to a position I didn’t play. Throughout the years this flame has been nurtured by many men and women, transforming me into the wonderful player I am today. But softball isn’t just a sport. There are many lessons I’ve learned from playing softball that I will carry for the rest of my life that I may not have learned otherwise.

Just like in real life, when you spend all your time thinking about your past mistakes, you have the possibility of missing the life changing opportunities presented to you. Additionally, softball has taught me that although one play can be the difference between winning and losing, it is also a time to adjust and learn, making a player better so they won’t make the same mistake again. You can’t treat every team you face the same, meaning a player must adjust when they face new pitchers, new batters, and new failures. Adaptability is an important skill to have once someone enters the adult world because plans are not always concrete, therefore being flexible and calm under pressure are valuable assets to have. But even when you lose, there is always something good that you take out of it, something you can use to fuel the fire and keep going. However, the most important lesson overall I’ve learned from softball is when to walk away. I’ve played for a few organizations throughout my middle and high school career as a softball player, not all of them have gone smoothly.
