In the article, “In Defense of a Loaded Word”, the author Ta-Nehisi Coates claims the use of the n-word should be exercised exclusively among African-Americans. Although Coates claims the word should be used, it shouldn’t be for several reasons. Firstly, the origins of the word came from a very dark time period in America when slavery was yet to be abolished. Second, because of the fact that Coates believes only African-Americans should only use this word and no other race can is a double standard. If, for example, a black person addresses another black person with the n-word, the context of the word is taken as a friendly greeting, but if a white person were to say the n-word to a black person, then the context of the word would change and be perceived as an insult to the black person just because a white person said it.
If you ask two different people what the n word meant you would probably get two completely different responses. One might say it is insulting and degrading, another might say it is a term of endearment. Throughout Huck Finn this word was used a total of 219 times. If the n word were not a degrading term there would not be so much controversy about banning and censoring Huck Finn. However, the word has been altered since it was used in the time period of Huck Finn.
In “Slurring Perspectives,” Elisabeth Camp begins with the argument that slurs are “powerful” and “insidious” precisely because they “present contents from a certain perspective, which is difficult to dislodge despite the fact that it is precisely what a nonbigoted hearer most wants to resist.” It is this reason why slurs are considered more offensive than “pure expressives” like “damn,” because they denote certain negative properties which are meant to contain harmful, “truth-conditionally robust properties” (Camp 330). Camp then goes on to say that slurs “conventionally signal a speaker’s allegiance to a derogating perspective on the group identified by the slur’s extension-determining core” (Camp 331). Throughout the novel Flight, written by Alexie Sherman, the protagonist, notably known as “Zits,” displays an obscene amount of vulgar language. The use of his patois that is now commonly used amongst the vast majority of teens around the world is one worth explaining. To start, vulgar language is essentially looked down upon because of how profane and “unnecessary” it is. The use of this language in everyday life, not only within this novel, is one that is used to convey emotion, as it is much easier to swear and curse than it is to convey your emotions with “proper” language.

In some cases' profanity makes the situation worse, and it can make people really angry and upset. In the chapter “The Man I Killed” Azar shares his opinion, “Oh, man, you fuckin’ trashed the fucker, Azar said. It was once part of history color people being called names, so technically that 's just history in a book. all the author did was write about history and what people did. The next reason is for profanity, really banding a book for using profanity when people use profanity everyday even when it might be on accident.
