Why Swearing Is Offensive

Geoffrey Nunberg states “[s]wear words don’t describe your feelings; they manifest them”. In other words, swearing is a unique way of expressing one’s emotions. Many definitions for swearing claim that it is the involvement of forbidden language in which one is rude and offensive. However, this is extremely vague because one can be ‘rude and offensive’ without swearing at all. So what makes swearing so offensive? Whats sets these words apart from other areas of language? Swearing is offensive because it involves judgement of one, the preference of behaviour that has grown through escalation and the quick harsh sound it gives off.
