The United States has been fighting the war on alcohol since the 1920’s, and today it still remains as a highly debatable topic. Many Americans believe that keeping the drinking age at 21 is acceptable, while others believe that 18 is the year that you should be trusted to make your own life changing decisions. And did you know that there are only seven countries in the world (196 countries in the world total) who have their drinking age as high as 21, and the US is one of those seven?
Once you're 18, you are not allowed to buy guns, drink alcohol, go to 21+ bars or clubs, rent a car, or even rent certain hotel rooms. On the other hand, you are allowed to smoke tobacco, the leader of preventable deaths in the United States. Yet, this could …show more content…

When you make something completely forbidden, it makes you feel like you need to experience whatever this forbidden thing it as soon as possible. It brings out the rebel in us all. What if the government told you that you were only allowed to use public restrooms if you are 35, no exception. Sneaking into the bathroom because you “can’t hold it any longer” now has become a story of a lifetime to be told throughout generations. After your experience you might later tell all of your friends about how you did it and didn’t get caught. How it looked on the inside, and how it is so much different than just using the restrooms at home. Now, we should all be very thankful that this is not the way things are, and when you use the public restrooms, it is not a big deal. Making alcohol illegal at 18 is pretty much the same thing. By postponing the age of when you’re allowed to drink, it creates more ambition and more curiosity to try it. Others may say that lowering the drinking age to 18 will only create even younger underaged drinkers. Although another way of thinking about it would be that because the drinking age is so high, often younger adults acquire fake IDs in order to go to clubs and bars. This circulation of extra IDs can actually become very dangerous because our nation is so concerned about national security, and in this case, it may just be better to wait until you turn 21 to drink than to get caught up with the FIB.
