Why The Olympics Should Be Abolished

The Olympic games have been continuously running for many years. This sporting event dates back to ancient greece and has carried on to today. Every two years countries come together to compete in a series of athletic sports and competitions alternating with the winter and summer games. The country that hosts the Olympic games spends billions of dollars worth of funds to clean up the city, build arenas, and make the city capable of transporting and housing that many people. Although the Olympics attract tourists and promote the local economy, the event should be abolished because it has grown out of hand and is no longer what it used to be. There are many advantages in a country hosting the olympics. The city’s local economy thrives as thousands of tourists come pouring in to stay in the city. They build large arenas in hopes that they can possibly use them later to profit off of. In recent years the cost of a city to host the Olympics has skyrocketed in price. The sports related cost used to be an average of a few billion dollars before 2010 but has recently raised to an average of over 16 billion dollars (Gaines 1). All this friendly camaraderie during the event is somewhat fabricated because every country is doing everything in their power to win the gold medal. Woven into the games is a tainted atmosphere that involves cheating and a burning desire to win at whatever means necessary. An example of this is in the 1988 Olympics when Ben Johnson broke his own world record of 9.79 seconds but was later discovered to have an anabolic steroid in his system (Sports Biggest).
