He fairly upholds Tom’s case in court even when the odds are against his client winning. While many other lawyers would scorn representing a black man, Atticus defends Tom Robinson’s with a non-racist view believing that all men should have equal rights in court. Also, he questions both the defense and prosecutor’s witnesses with a very respectful tone while Mr. Gilmer, the prosecutor, harasses the defense’s witnesses but not his own. Furthermore, his friends saw Atticus as a just man. As Miss Maudie, the Finch’s neighbor, remarked, “We’re paying the highest tribute we can pay a man.
Bella Duel Mrs. Thilken Period 4 18 May 2023 Folks are Folks “All men are created equal” - Thomas Jefferson. Society has evolved in abolishing racism and standing up to prejudice. People who have the character of Atticus Finch pave the way for change. The historical fiction novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, uses Atticus Finch as an inspiration and role model for defending racism and prejudice.
Catherine Pulsifer, an inspirational book author, once said, “Your character defines who you are by the actions you take.” In other words, your actions will always speak louder than any words you speak. Honorable actions are what build an honorable character, which is what can be said for Atticus Finch, a character from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus Finch was a righteous and honorable man who displayed many of Kamehameha Schools’ E Ola! Learner Outcomes, used to shape students into culturally, strong servant leaders.
Our whole lives growing up we are told to follow the “Golden Rule”. This rule is defined as to treat someone the way you want to be treated. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch a lawyer in a town called Maycomb in Alabama tries his best to be a role model for his two children. In the quiet town of Maycomb Atticus is given the job to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. Atticus wants to teach his kids Jem and Scout life lessons at an early age so they grow up as respectable people.
During the 1930’s, a great depression swept across America. A man by the name of Atticus Finch, district attorney of Maycomb county, resides in the small town of Maycomb during this time with his two children Jeremy Atticus Finch and Jean Louise Finch also known as Jem and Scout. As the district attorney he is called upon to defend a black man by the name of Tom Robinson who was accused of raping a white woman. Although he is highly respected through the town, the town resents him for doing so even tho it is his job as district attorney. The people of Maycomb respect Atticus Finch because he speaks for justice while they do not have the courage to and for the simple fact that he undoubtedly stands up for what he believes is right.
Though people are fond of Atticus himself, his decision to aim for Tom Robinson’s justice causes discomfort, “ ‘Lemme tell you somethin’ now, Billy’ a third said, ‘you know the court appointed him to defend this nigger.’ ‘Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. That’s what I don’t like about it” (186). The quote exposes that everyone understand the fact that he is assigned to the case but do not understand as to why he is so intent on proving a black man’s innocence. Since Atticus exceedingly expresses his thought on Tim’s innocence and involves so much of himself in the case with a black person, he obtains negative feedback and gets called a nigger-lover.
Atticus could not live with himself if he failed to give his utmost effort in clearing the accused, Tom Robinson’s, name. The lawyer feels that he has to do it. The people of Maycomb are small minded and hypocritical, Atticus Finch is not. Nothing can be done to make the towns people hear the truth. Tom Robinson, would be a free man, living with his family, if it wasn’t for the people of Maycomb.
Every day in our lives, heroes are all around us. They may not be what society tells us is a hero, like Superman or Batman. They do not wear fancy costumes or have super powers. But these heroes change the lives of the people around them, for the better. Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird is the charismatic, understanding father of Scout and Jem Finch as well as a hard working lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama.
Acts of violence can be observed in everyday life. Most of the violence that can be seen is very unjustified. In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee, there are many acts of violence shown. Each act of violence in the well written story is meant to teach the reader a valuable lesson.
In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch is a well-educated lawyer and father, who uses his job as a way to deliver change for the injustices against black people. For example, Miss Maudie wants to tell Scout and Jem “That there are some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your father’s one of them” (Lee 245). This further explains that Atticus’ job as lawyer acts as a pathway for him to provide justice for the unfair treatment and racism against black people. Although this is referred to as an unpleasant job, Atticus is committed to doing his job for his clients, and understands the importance of defending Tom Robinson.
The town is very racist, and most believe that African-Americans shouldn't be treated equally by themselves. However, Atticus is not one of those people. Instead, he defended African Americans' rights and did so using his powers in court by defending an African American in court. He and his family threatened to stop protecting the African-American man, Tom Robinson, but that didn't stop him from trying to preserve equal rights. Harper Lee writes, “Movin’ him to the county jail tomorrow,’ Mr. Tate was saying, ‘I don’t look for any trouble, but I can’t guarantee there won't be any”(Lee 194).
He was appointed to defend a black man named Tom Robinson for raping Mayella Ewell. Most townsfolk caught news of this and instantly began to give Atticus dirty looks and began calling him vulgar names. Atticus, is a very nice person who wants to do the right thing, and he has an opinion about people who disagree with him defending Tom Robinson. “They’re certainly entitled to think they, and they’re entitled to full respect for their opinions.” (120).
He was a very good person; he never misbehaved or did anything to harass others. He often helped Maella Ewell, but always refused to get paid for it. Likewise the real mockingbird does not do anything bad. It never steals from the fields, it does not nest in corncribs; all it does is sing and bring beauty in the lives of those it encounters. And as the mockingbird can not defend itself when it gets shot, a black man like Tom Robinson is completely defenceless in such a racist town and time, when he gets accused of rape by a white woman.
Atticus is faced with many threats along the way and is shunned in the community for defending a man of such a heinous crime. During the trial Atticus makes many strong arguments and it is plainly
Argumentative Essay “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win”. Atticus Finch decided to defend Tom Robinson when he was accused of raping a white woman. I would’ve done the same thing as Atticus because I believe that back then it wasn’t a very fair world. As soon as a white person blamed a black person Police or the Judge would automatically take the word or the white person.
