WHY WAS SLAVERY ABOLISHED?

There are many different factors to why slavery was abolished 180 years ago. the main reasons where; there was a change in economic interests, black campaigners and white campaigns. Although slavery was abolished in 1833, the slaves still to become apprentices for 6 years. In this essay I am going to be looking at these different factors and comparing them to each other to find out which one has the biggest impact to the abolition of slavery.

One of the reasons was that plantations were shutting down. Plantations were the slaves worked. Here they worked out in the fields collecting in the sugar. This was then sold to countries around the world for a huge profit, as they didn’t need to pay for the workers. However other countries such as Jamaica were now selling all their sugar to big countries, and because of this the plantations weren’t getting enough money in. This meant that they couldn’t afford to send ships over to pick up more slaves. For the slaves this meant that they were sent to countries to be sold in auctions, where the unsold slaves often get killed. They played a massive role in abolishing slavery. The two main white campaigners where Granville Sharp and William Wilberforce. Granville Sharp started protesting about slavery when in 1765 he found a badly beaten slave who had run away from his master. His old master tried to have him taken back to the Caribbean to work there in the plantations, but Sharp took the case to court and won. William Wilberforce was a MP who spoke out against slavery in parliament and changed the views of many MPs. I 1787 there was a petition that went around Manchester and gained 10,500 signatures, nearly half of Manchester.
