More people have read books about the Civil War than any other part of American history put together. The Civil War started on April 12th, 1861 and ended April 9th, 1865. The war started because the South seceded from the North because they didn't agree about slavery. The North though slavery was wrong because they believed all man is created equal. The South believed that African Americans were different and should be treated like property. Abraham Lincoln called the nation " A house divided … half slave and half free." One reason why The Battle Gettysburg is so important that it was the turning point of the war. The turning point of the war is when the south is winning but because of this battle the north starts winning. This is important because if this battle didn't occur the south might have won and that could have effected how we live, our economics, and they might still be a different country. Another reason is this one war killed more than a third of General Robert E. Lee's army and if that didn't happen General Lee's army would have been that much stronger. The final reason is it was the first battle to happen on Union soil that matters because that could make Lincoln think that it might start effecting the Union economy because they might burn stuff, steal stuff, or just damage stuff.
