Death penalty has existed for as long as we know. It is most common in dictatorships, but it is also performed in places that are usually considered more or less liberal, such as the USA. Each year, around 250 people are added to the so-called death row and 35 people are executed in the United States. Death row is what they call the row of people who have been sentenced to death, and are waiting for their own execution. People often have to wait several years in the death row.
The most common reason to be sentenced death penalty are forced rape, wilful murder, murder robbery, blasphemy and treason against the country. The most used execution method is lethal injections.
There is no evidence that death penalty are deterring crime, nevertheless this is an argument that people often use to support it. Death penalty is a punishment that is hard to alter. Then, at least new and greater evidence should be brought to attention.
Doesn't «an eye for an eye - mentality» make society tougher and more brutal? Most of those who support capital punishment strongly represent that mentality. It is not the danger of repetition, but the claimed preventive effect, which results in death penalty.

In addition to this, most of these countries still have a problem with crimes of violence. The fact that dictatorships carry out death penalty is no surprise. If you are willing to suppress with violence, you are not far from a legalisation of capital punishment.
Some countries claim to be democracies. There is no doubt that big social distinctions result in crimes of violence. Why should one who is in jeopardy of dying every day care about the law?
