DBQ: The Mongols: How Barbaric were the “Barbarians”? Throughout history, the term “barbarian” has been used to refer to groups of “uncivilized” people with savage and evil qualities. What it essentially means is foreigners. A specific group of people called “barbaric” are the Mongols, a small tribe from central asian grasslands who during the 13th century, conquered much of the known world.
The Mongols had one of the largest land empires in history though this did not come easily to them. The Mongols had a large influence on both the political and economic systems of Russia and China for a period of time though in Russia, rulers still had control of their land and were left to rule themselves to an extent whereas in china the Mongols affected them more by controlling them
Besides their murderous characteristics, the Mongols were very successful in expanding their empire with improving trade and having excellent plans. According to Document A, it shows a map and a key on the seven largest empires in the world. The largest empire with a grand total of 4,860,000 square miles of land was the Mongol Empire. This achievement is extremely significant to our knowledge of history. This does not mean that their achievements of killing millions should make us ignore this tremendous achievement.
Genghis Khan and his descendants were cruel, bloodthirsty, and ruthless people, but that does not mean that they were uncivilized. The Mongols did kill and conquer millions of people and promoted senseless destruction ,but while they did that they were at war. At war there is no rules and there is no such thing as uncivilized. At war people do what they need to do to be victorious. At war, people get killed and towns get destroyed.

Were The Mongols Barbaric? When it comes to the Mongols, from their strategies in war to how they survived there everyday life the mongols were all out brutal and barbaric. There are alot of things people know the Mongols for but what most sticks out is there strategies of war. How do there strategies in war make them barbaric? Well because the Mongols were not only brutal in war and showed no mercy they would kill women and even children, They were smart enough to keep the children who were not old enough to remember what happened and raise them as their own.
More specifically, my reason were as follows: their treatment of many people in the regions that they conquered, destruction of property, and caused much devastation across the lands. Upon conquering those in foreign lands, the Mongols treated the people without dignity or respect of any kind. It seemed that they had a disregard for human life with the people were alien to them and discriminated against them whilst in the peoples’ native land. Once conquered the peoples’ lifestyles were ripped from them, even including the elites.
Both the Aztecs and Mongols both were highly known post-classical empires that had many differences and similarities within their cultures. The mongols and the aztecs affected many cultures in each of their areas, which made them very well known for both good and bad reasons: for their ingenuity, but also for their ruthlessness. Both conquered many civilization and captured people from those civilizations Mongols were swift and fast warriors Aztec warriors were skilled and strong, but armour was less developed than the mongols.
