A hex, in the Wiccan sense, is a manipulating spell that can be cast for protection, to help another, or even to harm another. Though this has been stigmatised as an ill-intended or malicious act, a hex isn’t all negative; it depends on what the practitioner’s intentions are. The word ‘hex’ is rooted deep into Norwegian culture. Originating from Pennsylvania Dutch, a hex is part of folk magick the norse immigrants and Native Americans collaborated on and created, called Pow-Wow magick. Originally utilised as protective magick, a hex can be used for negative intentions, though it is not highly recommended. You can put a hex on your home, deterring anyone will ill or harmful intentions away. But, keep in mind, when casting a hex, one must be extremely careful, to be focused and undistracted, and make sure they are saying the correct words in the correct context, or they could end up doing something they never intended. But, that also goes with any spell working. In modern Wicca, there are some traditions that do allow hexing, whether it be ill-fated or well intended, the decision is purely up to the practitioner, as long as they have contemplated the consequences. Conversely, there are traditions that completely forbid manipulative magick. Then, there are traditions that will allow a positive hex, such as a hex for protection, but absolutely prohibit any form of malicious magick. It all depends on the practitioner's path. In my personal path, I will choose to never utilise any harmful magick. In my point of view, I would say that a hex is just like any other spell. The results are always linked to one’s intention, and so they are the ones to determine whether a certain hex is good or bad.
