William Blake
William Blake is one of the most renowned and innovative poets in the history of English literature. While only a child he had a vivid imagination and spoke to his parents about seeing angels playing amongst him, encountering visions of heaven and hell throughout London and the nearby countryside, and spotting God keeping a close eye on him during tasks and chores. William Blake uses his creative imagination and visions to express his ideas and thoughts of religion and human nature.

Robert was Blake’s favorite brother who died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty four. At the moment of Robert's death, “Blake allegedly saw his spirit ascend through the ceiling, joyously.”(Richardson) Blake began to experience more visions. The following year, Robert visited Blake as a spirit in a vision and showed a new method of writing that Blake called “illuminated printing.” Blake's technique of Illuminated printing “was to produce his text and design on a copper plate with an impervious liquid. The plate was then dipped in acid so that the text and design remained in relief. That plate could be used to print on paper, and the final copy would be then hand colored.” (Richardson) Blake began experimenting with this method in his two books of poems, “Songs of Innocence” and “Songs of Experience.” The death of William Blake’s favorite brother Robert greatly influenced his poetry by allowing Blake to experience more visions and being able to create the new method of writing, “illuminated
