During this time, the thirteen colonies had a desire to be free from Great Britain due to taxation and other issue’s. In order to become free from Great Britain, the colonies had to sign a document which is known as the Article of Confederation. As president of a new country, Thomas Jefferson was forced to assert his authority and make difficult decisions he felt necessary to promote a strong and unified nation. In 1803, he made a decision that created much philosophical controversy at the time, but is said to be one of his greatest achievements as president. Though Jefferson was criticized for abandoning his strict Republican beliefs in purchasing the Louisiana territory, he did not actually desert his political ideals because he took into account his notions of individualism’s necessity to a nation, an agrarian-based society, and the Constitution’s allowance for acquiring new territory. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States which was an essential aspect to the individualism of the country. Jefferson believed vast amounts property was critical to develop Republican citizens because with more land came more independence and responsibility.
, this quote expresses how in one way or another humans are always going to affect each other in the most insignificant ways. Humans are connected, all of their actions and inactions have an effect on others, and how death can have an effect on humankind.
The act of saving someone can be defined as heroic and selfless. In the case of Cameron Hollopeter, who had experienced a seizure and fell onto the track of an approaching train, and Wesley Autrey, the father who saved Hollopeter, the actions were compared to psychological egoism. This was detailed in whether Autrey, having almost sacrificed his life to save Hollopeter, was done out of pure altruism or selfish desires. The theory of psychological egoism follows as that anything an individual is “capable of pursuing” is ultimately in their “self interest” (Feinberg, 584).
Thomas Paine once said, “But where says some is the King of America? I 'll tell you Friend, he reigns above, and doth not make havoc of mankind like the Royal Brute of Britain...let it be brought forth placed on the divine law, the word of God; let a crown be placed thereon, by which the world may know, that so far as we approve of monarchy, that in America THE LAW IS KING.” This quote exemplifies that Paine placed greater faith and value on God than he did on a government that consisted of one supreme ruler; as long as America approved a monarchy government, the only standards people pursued were the laws formed by that leader. Because of Paine’s childhood, dislike of monarchies, and belief in strong state governments, it’s evident why he supported anti-federalism. Paine’s upbringing likely influenced his future political beliefs.
As Humans we have a moral and social responsibility to fulfil Zach Bryan once said, “In an ego-filled late night crowd seems to be where I feel most alone.” Ego is defined by a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance. In Zach Bryan’s song Burn Burn Burn, he talks about how there are crowds and crowds of people who are full of self-importance and self-praise, but not for other people. Too many people focus on what is beneficial for them and don’t think about their social and moral responsibilities to other people and their communities. As individuals in society, it is our duty to uphold our social responsibilities and act accordingly on them.
If people cannot think of their bond to mankind, the actions of a few are at risk of harming many. Within the community, no one knows each other; they are all confined to their individual lives, with little to no concern for others. When in Rear Window the dog is killed, its owner chastises the people in the apartment
In Harry’s monologue “The Unselfishness Trap,” Browne questions whether putting your own happiness over another’s is selfish. He mentions that many people throughout history and individuals in our society today have always been encouraged to put other’s needs over their own. He states that if they do not, they are normally considered selfish. Browne disagrees that they should be considered selfish and mentions that every person is striving for happiness in their own life and everyone’s pursuit is different.
(Stein 314). While living your own life in a world full of other humans, it is important to realize that life does not revolve around you and to appreciate the fact that there are people who are there to support you and guide you, acting as a racing team. A human needs to have friends and family to depend on, and to be there for others when they need someone to depend on. Therefore, a good human can’t just focus on their own success or personal achievements. A champion racer gives credit to others when they reach their goal.
In 1850 America was a country that was young and reckless. In the 50’s we went through 3 presidents; Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and James Buchanan. The safety pin, dishwasher, and sewing machine were invented. We had California, Minnesota, and Oregon joined the United States. When I step back and look at the 1850s, I see a solid decade in the further development of America, however, the selfishness that Southern Americans partook in, is disgraceful.
In the depths of every human brain, there lies the simple chemicals that basically control everything every person does. Sometimes, a person’s chemicals are changed in infinitesimal, but cataclysmic ways. Sometimes that same person controls the fates of millions of their fellow people. Mental illness in major figures of our society has definitively altered the course of human history, causing both avoidable death and changing the outcome of entire wars and social movements.

David Hume holds the opinion that selfishness is man’s most substantial characteristic. He believes that though it is rare to find someone “who loves any single person better than himself; yet it is as rare to meet with one, in whom all the kind affections, taken together, do not overbalance all the selfish” (423). In fact, Moliére’s Harpagon is governed by selfishness and we must consider that this is the chief reason of his greed. Harpagon is selfish because he is delighted to hear declarations that increase his own-importance. When in need of money, Frosine puts on the masque of hypocrisy and flatters him, “You’ve got exactly the sort of figure women fall in love with, and you dress the part too”; “You’re irresistible.
First of all, the impact of interpersonal relations exists in the social apathy. The development of economic growth and technology, developing country’s social apathy more than developed country, especially such as China. According to The Economist (2013) writes that “In 2011 a toddler known as Yue Yue was knocked down by two different vehicles on a busy street in Foshan, a booming city in Guangdong province in southern China”.
