A genre is the classification of a specific type of writing. Lord of the Flies, one of the greatest novels written of all time by William Golding. It is considered one of the Golding’s best works and is a nobel prize winner. Many genres tie into the novel, but mostly contains historical context relating to World War 2 and the Cold War. Golding’s wartime experience led him to question himself about the good and evil in the world and human violence — the two most important themes of the novel. The novel itself allows the reader to focus more on mankind and civilization. There are several tiny details which reveal a lot; Golding wishes the audience to see the moral of the novel and how it can be applicable towards human nature. Lord of the flies …show more content…

The boys are stuck on the island meaning that they must learn to self govern themselves. They decide that they should have a chief. The conch serves as a symbol of authority and order since every time the conch gets blown , an assembly is called. Ralph ends up being voted as chief. He shows acts of leadership by providing shelter, guiding them for food and in hopes of being rescued. Jack is envious of Ralph and wants to be chief. Jack then starts hunting and only those that chose to join him will be allowed to eat. Piggy then questions Jack, “Aren’t I having none” (Golding 73)? Jack knows that he can pick on Piggy because he is weaker than him. The boys are terrified and want to go home. He uses his hunting skills to give or take away food to keep the others depending on him instead. Golding shows numerous ways how the children go from being civilized, to savage. An example would be throwing away their school uniform. School uniforms are suppose to represent the school community, however the boys just strip it away once they land. First ones to strip are Ralph and Piggy, “ Ralph did a surface dive and swim under water with his eyes open; the sandy edge of the pool loomed up like a hillside. he turned over, holding his nose. Piggy was looking determined and began to take off his shorts” (Golding 13). The two of them seem to be thrilled about having no supervision of any adult whatsoever. Ralph ,as well as Piggy, seem to be having the time of their lives, diving into the ocean naked. The boys come off as savages by abandoning the school uniform, which in return makes them feel light and pleasant. There are two characters that represents the transformation from civilization to savagery, Ralph and Jack. Ralph represents law and order while Jack represents savagery and violence. Since Ralph was selected as leader, he represents order and reason, as well as sticking to the main idea of being rescued. Ralph, Piggy and Simon are the ones
