William Henry Knox was born in Boston, Massachusetts on June 25, 1750 (“Knox, Henry”). Henry was a very intelligent child, and he was interested in books from a very young age. At the age of eighteen he became a bookstore owner in downtown Boston. Three years later, he joined the Continental Army, according to Biography.com (“Henry Knox Biography”).Around that time, Henry had both joined the Boston Grenadier Corps and begun to study military science and engineering (“Knox, Henry”) This would lead to one of the greatest military careers known in history.

Similarly, Paul Laurence Dunbar, an African American poet, describes the hidden nature of individuals in order to protect themselves and conceal their pain. Golding’s novel and Dunbar’s poem, “We Wear the Mask,” both express masks as ways for individuals to escape reality and as a source of strength; however, the characters in Dunbar’s poem are restricted by the pressures of society while the boys in Lord of the Flies unleash true feelings through their innate savageness. In Lord of the Flies, the newfound freedom on the deserted island and liberation from authority allows the adolescents to completely change their attitudes and live a new life altogether.
William Golding uses the theme that humans are naturally bad at heart, in the book Lord of the Flies to highlight that without the order and respect we choose to live our daily lives with our human nature will ultimately take us into chaos and savagery. Morals are what we choose to live by, this is what keeps us accountable. Morals do not appear overnight. Overtime they are ingrained throughout our childhood. Giving us a sense of right and wrong.

William March, born William March Campbell, was an American author and serviceman who was born in 1893 in Mobile, Alabama and passed away in 1954 in New Orleans, Louisiana. March grew up in a family with eleven children that was extremely poor. Due to his low-income upbringing, March was forced to leave school and join the workforce early. Eventually, March finished his high school degree and studied law for a year at the University of Alabama. After World War I broke out, March enlisted and became a well decorated soldier due to his bravery in France.
In society, there are many standards that people must uphold to. In western society, it is uncommon for men to have long hair or for women to have short hair. Naturally, people will be conscientious of their differences between other people and try to change them or cover them up, and often times people who do not follow the standard are looked down upon. This leads to people trying to fit into the groups around them almost thoughtlessly. However, when people conform without thinking, it can lead to dangerous consequences.

William Golding was born in his grandmother's house, 47 Mount Wise, New quay, Cornwall, and he spent many childhood holidays there. He grew up in Marlborough, Wiltshire, where his father (Alec Golding) was a science master at Marlborough Grammar School (1905 to retirement). Alec Golding was a teacher at the school the young Golding and his elder brother Joseph attended. His mother, Mildred (Conroe), kept house at 29, The Green, Marlborough, and was a campaigner for female suffrage.
