William Golding was born on September 19, 1911 in Cornwall, England. His father was a schoolmaster and his mother fought for woman’s right to vote. His father ran a grammar school and that is where he received his first education. Golding attempted to write his first novel at the age of 12. William attended Brasenose College at Oxford University to study English literature. In 1934, Golding published his first work, which was a collection of poetry called Poems. After college in 1935, William became an English and philosophy teacher Bishop Wordsworth’s School. In 1940, Golding joined the Royal Navy and fought in World War II. In 1954, Golding published his first novel, Lord of the Flies. In 1983, William was awarded with the Nobel
