“Would you rather be loved or feared?” ~ Machiavelli. All humans would like to be loved rather than feared and to have someone on your side is one of the best feelings of all. In Lord of the Flies acquiring followers and friends was a big obstacle for some. This issue was addressed in different ways due to the difference in people on the island. In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, both Jack’s controlling and violent nature and Roger bullying the other kids causes the society of the island to fall apart due to fear.
Jack’s arrogance causes the kids to not follow him because he is so controlling. He then turns to violence to win them over. At the regularly held full group meetings, Jack seems to speak up about who is in charge
